A Healthier You
This Winter
Protect Your
Skin from
Winter Rays
When the warm, sunny weather has
disappeared and the winter season brings
grey clouds and dull, dreary skies, it's still
imperative to practice proper sun safety
to help reduce your risk of skin cancer.
The chance of developing skin cancer
in British Columbia is about one in seven.
To help ensure your skin is protected this
winter, consider the following:
TEMPERATURE DOESN'T MATTER
The sun produces ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which reaches the earth even on a
cloudy day. UV radiation carries no heat,
meaning that you can be exposed to a lot
of UV even if the weather outside is cool.
REDUCE YOUR RISK
The risk of developing skin cancer
increases as your total exposure to UV
radiation builds up over time. One way
to limit your sun exposure is by seeking
shade when outdoors.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN
BEFORE HITTING THE SLOPES
A sunny day in the snow will reflect a lot of
UV radiation onto your skin. The sun's rays
increase by 10 per cent for every 1,000 metres
of altitude, and fresh snow and ice can reflect
up to 85 per cent of UV radiation.
