Navigating an Emergency Now is the time to educate yourself on what to do in an emergency You’re probably wondering why you’re even reading this article. “I don’t need to know about the ER. I’m not having an emergency right now!” But the truth is, this is exactly the time to educate yourself on what to do in an emergency, so you can be prepared when one arises. Here are three tips on how to get the best emergency care possible: 1. Plan ahead. Assemble a list of medical information that doctors would need in the event you are unable to communicate with them, including medications you’re taking, allergies, health conditions, major surgeries and contact information for your doctor and family. 2. Get to the hospital—fast. If you’re having an emergency, don’t wait. And never drive yourself or let someone drive you if you think you’re having a heart attack or a stroke. Call 911. Ambulances are equipped so that emergency medical responders can provide care during transport. 3. Speak up. If you feel your condition is worsening while you are waiting, make sure you inform the nurse, including the specific symptoms you are noticing. Emergency staff and providers are trained to evaluate your symptoms. Above all, know that Meeker Memorial Hospital is here to help you should the need arise.
