editor’s letter F F Rita’s Kitchen at the JW Marriott Camelback Inn, a favorite of Editor-in-Chief Mitzi Gaskins, features home-style regional cuisine from north and south of the border. ood. one simple word that can set off a thousand debates in just as many directions. there are those who consider food as nothing more than sustenance, the fuel our bodies require to get us through each day. and then there are self-admitted foodies who see a great meal not only as a source of energy, but also as one of life’s truest pleasures. when i travel, i let my culinary curiosity enjoy the journey. when i’m home, i love to cook—especially mexican cuisine— and i’m always searching for new recipes and restaurants that are authentic to the flavors of my texas roots. which is why, in this issue of JWM magazine, i am completely invested in “a Seat at the table,” our feature article on the food blogs, websites and mobile apps, along with the traditional print media, that are dedicated to all things culinary. it is literary food for thought. But first, this issue’s feast for the senses takes root in our Essentials section, where we revel in the gorgeousness of candlelight and, particularly, the ambient effect of aromatic candles. my house is full of them, and i put them to use often: for an elegant touch at dinner, to add an air of relaxation at bath time and, quite simply, to provide a sense of comfort. jw marriott is introducing a signature fragrance in its hotels called “Subtle Sophistication.” while so many of the jw experiences our guests love are embedded in memory, this exclusive scent is one you can actually enjoy at home, as “Subtle Sophistication” candles will be available in jw marriott hotel gift shops, spa boutiques and at curatedbyjw.com. also in this issue, we take you on a magic carpet ride through the places where exquisite handmade rugs are treasured and can be yours with a little expert guidance. we introduce you to the hot new hues of 2012, as determined by the arbiters of color: the Pantone color institute. and we visit mumbai, india’s most cosmopolitan and eclectic city. as always, whether it’s through the pages of this magazine or as you travel for business or pleasure, i hope you discover new experiences that keep you coming back for more.
