What's Your
Sleep Personality?
Find out what it means
for your overall health
I
n today's world, one that rewards productivity and workaholism, many people
wear sleepless nights like badges of
honor. But there's nothing honorable about
forsaking your health for an extra hour or
two of work each day. When it comes to getting enough sleep, most of us know we can
do better. So what are you doing about it?
THINKING
ABOUT IT
WORRYING
ABOUT IT
You probably know how much sleep
you get (or don't) each night. But how
does that compare with what you need?
Most adults require seven to nine hours
of sleep each night-but 30 percent
of them get fewer than six hours,
according to the National
Sleep Foundation.
Do you lie in bed at night unable
to sleep or do you not feel refreshed
even after a full night's sleep? You may
have a sleep disorder, such as insomnia
or sleep apnea. Talk to your doctor
about whether a sleep study
is right for you.
IGNORING IT
ACTING
ON IT
If you're among the 30 percent
who aren't getting enough shut-eye,
there could be health consequences. Lots
of restorative processes take place during
sleep, particularly deep sleep. Your blood
pressure drops, and your body releases
hormones that help with everything
from developing muscles to
regulating appetite.

Sometimes environmental factors
are the cause of sleep problems. Start
by establishing a relaxing bedtime
routine; avoiding alcohol, nicotine and
caffeine too close to bedtime; making
sure your room is cool, dark and quiet;
and exercising no later than three
hours before bedtime.
