it comes to their health,”
says Bahador Momeni,
MD, an internal medicine physician with
the University of Maryland Baltimore
Washington Medical Center and a clinical
associate professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
“Thankfully, women are a major influence
in keeping the men in their lives healthy.”
But how and when should you push the
man in your life to seek routine care?

an influenza vaccination, and immunizations such as tetanus and pneumonia.
Men older than age 45 should discuss
the benefits of prostate and colon cancer
screening options with their physicians,
and overweight men should be tested
for diabetes.
Q
IF MY HUSBAND AVOIDS
DOCTOR VISITS, SHOULD
I TRY ENCOURAGING HIM TO GO?
A: Yes. Men often see their doctors because of spousal encouragement. In fact,
according to a men’s health study conducted by Harris Interactive, 78 percent of
U.S. males say their spouses or significant
others have influence over their decision
to go to the doctor.

Q
WHAT ARE SOME TECHNIQUES
I CAN USE TO GET MY HUSBAND
TO THE DOCTOR?
A: Try zeroing in on what’s most important to him or appealing to his emotions.
Encourage the sports lover to get a clean
bill of health before beginning a new
activity. Remind the family man that he
needs to be in good health to watch his
family thrive.
IS IT IMPORTANT FOR A MAN TO
HAVE AN ANNUAL CHECKUP?
A: Although the American Academy of
Family Physicians does not recommend an
annual checkup, it does recommend having a primary care physician. Trained to
handle a man’s physical, mental and emotional health concerns and to keep track of
his ongoing medical history, a primary care
physician can provide an ongoing relationship that results in a higher quality of care.

SAFETY TOP OF MIND
Don’t rely on memory alone to keep track of your medications. When you keep a written record of the prescriptions
and supplements you’re taking, your doctor can make sure
the combination is safe and effective, and your loved ones
can help you remember to take your daily doses.
