Friedel, MD, an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and chief of the Friedenwald Eye Institute at University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus, believes that a good patient and physician relationship is key to positive patient outcomes. “Patients feel more at ease when they understand the reasons why a specific treatment plan was chosen. I find taking the extra time to help patients understand what was found during exams builds trust and allows for a closer physician-patient relationship,” Dr. Friedel says. In fact Dr. Friedel has patients whom he’s seen for the past 30 years, even treating three generations of family members. Dr. Friedel graduated from University of Maryland College Park with a bachelor’s degree in zoology, then obtained his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed his internship in internal medicine and residency at Maryland General Hospital, now University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus, and has been practicing here since. Read more about Dr. Friedel below: WHEN I WAS A CHILD, I DREAMED OF BECOMING: President of General Motors Corp. MY FIRST JOB WAS: Working as a stock boy in my family’s neighborhood grocery store. IF I WASN’T A HEALTHCARE PROVIDER, I WOULD BE: A college professor and researcher. TO UNWIND AFTER A LONG DAY: I work in my garden. RIGHT NOW, I’M LISTENING TO: My secretaries talking. WHEN I REALLY WANT TO GET AWAY: I go to an island with my family. MY BEST HEALTH TIP FOR PATIENTS: Balance—no extremes in what you eat, drink and do. FAMILY: I am married to Fern, whom I have known since high school. We married during my third year of medical school. We have two daughters. 4 MARYLAND’S HEALTH MATTERS  Emergency eye care is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To
