FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR YOUR JOURNEY TO BETTER HEALTH As we continue to implement changes that support a more preventive health model at all of our hospital services, you may hear our physicians and nurses utter the words, "patient-centered." Truth be told, hospitals use lots of buzzwords, but this one is worth discussing. It is most often used when talking about primary care. All too often patient visits seem to be driven by a list of physician questions focused on diagnoses or immediate problems to be solved. Most health complaints usually derive from a person's lifestyle, eating habits or stress. Our goal over the next few years is to develop resources to help address the full spectrum of what makes patients sick and what keeps them sick. This approach demands that we change the way we provide care. In the near future, you may not only be prescribed medications, but you may be asked to take a class to learn how your lifestyle choices are affecting your health. You may be given surgery, but you may be asked to work closely with a health educator so that you don't find yourself in surgery a year later. University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus should not only be seen as the place you go to get healthier, but the place you go to stay healthier. Let us be your partner on your journey to better health. D E PA R T M E N TS 3 13 A HEALTHY START AT A GLANCE Brian G.
