phySician update Inside the White Coats Meet the new physicians who have joined Upper Chesapeake Health SportS Medicine Derek McCoy, MD Derek McCoy, MD, has joined Maryland Emergency Medicine Network and Upper Chesapeake Orthopedic Specialty Group in a dual role. He is a family medicine physician who earned a sports medicine fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Dr. McCoy has experience as a team physician for a variety of college, semiprofessional and professional sports teams and currently serves as the team physician for The John Carroll School. In addition, he works in the urgent care track of the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center Emergency Department, and he is passionate about working with individuals of all ages who have sports-related injuries. plaStic/reconStructive Surgery Mathew Thomas, MD As part of the Bel Air Center for Plastic and Hand Surgery, Mathew Thomas, MD, specializes in both plastic and hand surgery. He is experienced in facial lesion removal, breast reconstruction, skin flap repairs, hand injury repair, carpal tunnel surgery, and more, as well as a variety of aesthetic services. He received his undergraduate degree with honors from Princeton University and his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed both his surgical internship and his general surgery training as part of a six-year integrated residency program in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Behavioral health Richard Lewis, MD Ravikumar Bhalavat, MD 14 Upper Chesapeake Health’s Behavioral Health is located at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace and includes both inpatient and outpatient services. The following psychiatrists have joined the team and are all board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Richard Lewis, MD, joins us from Austin, Texas, and is the chair of Psychiatry for UCH. He received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine’s seven-year Bachelor of Science/MD program. He received his postdoctoral training from The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Ravikumar Bhalavat, MD, joins us from Shreveport, La. He received his medical degree from Government Medical College, Bhavnagar, India, and his internship and residency from the Louisiana State University Health Science Center in Shreveport.
