EIN BERLINER It’s a Sunday afternoon in Prenzlauer Berg, with a heavy golden sun shining through the ﬂowering chestnut trees. A pile of eight barefoot children giggle raucously from a massive swing by the sandbox where Dahlia, my daughter, is sitting with two local girls running an imaginary ice cream stand. At least that’s what she was doing when my husband, Justin, and I last looked up from our giant glass mugs of Schwarzbier and plate of bratwurst. We’re at the Prater, Berlin’s oldest biergarten, where Rosa Luxemburg once roused workers with her orations on proletarian power, and where today Berlin’s hipster set and their progeny, careening between the picnic tables on Kettler tricycles, come to while away the hours.
