The revelation came from Nicholas Arthur, master club fitter at The Ritz-Carlton Members Club in Sarasota, Fla. We were standing on the driving range — part of a sprawling, immaculately groomed practice facility where U.S. Women’s Open champion Paula Creamer works on her game away from the professional tour. Arthur had offered to check the fit of my golf clubs and the state of my swing — two of many instructional services he offers to members and guests of the club. Professionally fit clubs, the golfer’s equivalent of a bespoke suit, have become an important part of any serious player’s arsenal. For our session, Arthur had brought along the latest technology, a “Zelocity” machine that uses high-tech radar to capture data about swing speed and ball flight. To demonstrate how small variations between clubs can have a dramatic impact on the golf swing, Arthur handed me four different identical-looking 6-irons and had me hit three balls with each. With the first club, the ball shot beautifully off the center of the clubface and soared toward the target. With each successive club, however, my shots became increasingly erratic, until I could barely even make contact.
