Somewhere between petroglyphs and Instagram, talking drums and Twitter, came a communication revolution that today is forgotten. In 1869, the Austro-Hungarian post office revolutionized global communication when it introduced the postcard, a Correspondenz-Karte. A disruptive technology, with same-day delivery in Europe’s major cities (thanks to hyperefficient state postal services), the postcard was as close to real-time communication as Victorians and modernists would know and, as a result, became a popular way of spreading the word on world news and personal events. “During the craze, postcards were everywhere, sold in shops dedicated completely to them or by individual vendors on street corners,” explains Leonard A. Lauder, chairman emeritus of the Estée Lauder cosmetics empire. And Lauder would know, having amassed the world’s foremost collection of postcards which at last count, had 100,000 postcards — more or less. More or
