Though still his best-known startup, it is one of a multitude of enterprises launched by Walker, who started at the age of 9 by publishing his own newspaper, and is now listed among the most prolific living inventors. His companies range from online gaming to security and surveillance systems to education. A recent acquisition was the TEDMED Conference, which brings together scientists and doctors at the cutting edge of medicine. Walker’s wide-ranging interests are reflected in the library of his Connecticut home, which houses a collection so vast and unusual that a film has been made about it. He likes to leave home “as little as possible,” he says, but ensures that travel doesn’t interfere with his voracious appetite for learning new things.
