Its CEO, Carl Bass, has a schedule typical for the head of a multinational corporation: three trips a year to China, three to Europe and up to a dozen within the U.S. One secret, he says, is to keep a bag that is always packed and ready to go; another is to color-code the dozens of cables and adapters that he is obliged to travel with (red for Apple devices, black for Microsoft, etc.). His relaxation onboard, and at his home in Berkeley, Calif., is to sketch designs for the sculptural furniture pieces that he creates and occasionally exhibits. Last year, a bench he designed, fabricated entirely from a 3-D printer, was a hit at the Burning Man festival (below).
