T THE WOW FACTOR There is one word I frequently use when I stay at a Ritz-Carlton hotel: wow. From the elegant design of Hotel Arts Barcelona to the outdoor spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain in Arizona, small details and unique experiences add up to memories that last a lifetime. Recently, I had the privilege of visiting two of our newest and most spectacular properties, and I’m still wowed by the experience. At The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong, I was awed by “the world’s tallest hotel” — not to mention the cuisine, which also soars to extraordinary heights. I dined at the hotel’s restaurant, Tin Lung Heen, and Chef Paul Lau’s interpretation of Cantonese food is truly visionary. In this issue’s article “Reinventing Retro” (page 106), Lau describes how Cantonese cuisine is deﬁned by a balance of different ﬂavors. He has certainly mastered the technique, and I loved the delicate nature of his cooking and its exquisite presentation. In Puerto Rico, Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is setting a new “wow” standard (page 87). The natural, unspoiled setting feels as if you are worlds away from the stresses of daily life, and the highlight of my time at the resort was spent at Su Casa, the property’s historic home built in the 1950s by Laurance S. Rockefeller. The colonial-inspired structure has been restored to original period details and is simply gorgeous. Of course, each Ritz-Carlton hotel dazzles with its individual charms.
