Rather than casting it as a social problem, he examined it as a model for a new kind of urban community, one that is selfgenerated rather than prescribed — the residents of the tower have, in fact, created a highly functioning society. It is ideas like this one that have propelled Brillembourg’s organization, Urban-Think Tank, to the forefront of modern thinking about social planning and design, and it is what keeps him in transit for half the year, between his home in New York, his professorship in Zurich and ongoing projects throughout the developing world. His principal lament? “The rubbish that’s on the TV on airplanes. Why not make it good?
