She visits them twice a week, sharing her own story and encouragement through the process. Wright often gets questions about issues that only someone who has lived through the experience can understand and answer. Was she scared when she left the hospital? When could she walk again? How did she tie her shoes? “It’s the little things you don’t think of that can really be upsetting. By telling them my experience, it helps them know that they can get through it,” Wright says. “I like to wear jewelry, but I had to wear the same pair of earrings for months because my fine motor skills were not good enough to change them. It’s those kind of things that may not sound important, but they make a difference.” Every buddy she has been assigned has been special to her. She cried with the woman whose husband wanted a divorce after her stroke. She laughed with the man whose mantra was, “I will overcome.” And she still thinks about the woman whom she couldn’t persuade to talk. “I think about what other questions I could have asked her or how I could have reached her,” Wright says. The Rehab Buddies is a nineyear-old program that pairs rehab survivors with new rehab patients. The buddies use their hard-earned “credentials” of having had a stroke, paralysis or other condition requiring rehab to bring hope to people who are facing rehab. The buddies receive ongoing training and education. Penrose-St. Francis Health Services 2222 N.
