around the region cancer study The Penrose Cancer Center has been selected to participate in a national pilot study to help develop new ways to detect, treat and prevent cancer. The National Cancer Institute awarded Penrose’s sponsor, Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI), a $1.1 million contract to participate in the study conducted through The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Penrose is one of two CHI hospitals that will lead the early stages of this national initiative. TCGA’s goal is to identify the changes that occur in the genomes of cancer cells to help researchers develop new and improved methods of detecting, treating and even preventing cancer. Penrose will be collecting biospecimens from specific tumor sites for this work. The types of tumors being studied in the project include brain cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer, which together account for more than 200,000 cases of cancer in the United States each year. For more information on this and other cancer research, visit online at penrosecancercenter.org. halos for heroes Hearing the words “thank you” from a patient is more precious to doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals than any prestigious accolade or award. Patients at Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center and St. Thomas More Hospital have a special way to show their gratitude. Called Halos for Heroes, patients can recognize exemplary care by making a taxdeductible donation in their hero’s honor to the hospitals’ foundations. These donations are put into the patient financial assistance funds, which help needy patients pay for medical expenses. The honored hero is awarded a beautiful Halos for Heroes pin and certificate. A photograph of the pin presentation will be sent to the donor to thank them for their thoughtfulness. For more information on honoring your hero, contact one of the following foundations: • Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation: 719-776-7092 • St. Mary-Corwin Health Foundation: 719-557-5249 • St. Thomas More Health Foundation: 719-285-2162 infusion therapy in cañon city Patients in the Cañon City area who need infusion therapy no longer have to travel to other cities for these services. St. Thomas More Hospital expanded its infusion therapy services to include remodeled rooms and a dedicated infusion staff. Returning patients only need to register once a month, making services more patient-friendly and quicker. Evening appointments also have been added. Infusion therapy is the intravenous delivery of medications, hydration or nutrition. Pain management and cancer chemotherapy are common infusion therapy needs. For more information about the program, including the range of therapies offered, call 719-285-2140. 52 vim & vigor • su mme r 2 009 http://www.penrosecancercenter.org
