HAV NG RESERVAT F rom the bottomless breadbasket to mile-high burgers and decadent desserts, most restaurants are a minefield for people trying to eat healthfully. But with a little knowledge and willpower, you can learn to navigate a menu and make smart choices no matter where you go. Don’t let restaurant land mines keep you from having a healthy meal out COURSE OF ACTION Once that plate of perfectly prepared food is in front of you, you know you’re going to eat it. And it can be dangerous, because the average—yes, the average—restaurant meal contains about 1,000 to 2,000 calories. That’s why making healthy decisions should start before you even leave home. “The Internet has a wealth of information on nutrition facts for restaurant meals,” says Toby Smithson, R.D., a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. Sites like healthydiningfinder.com and calorieking.com allow you to search for a restaurant, view menus and get nutrition information. Many restaurant chains also offer this information on their own sites. If you’re forced to be a bit more spontaneous, subtly check out other diners’ plates to get an idea of portion size and then order accordingly, recommends American Heart Association spokeswoman Alice H. Lichtenstein, D.Sc. FIRST BY JENNIFER DAACK WOOLSON 16 Vim & Vigor · SUM M ER 2 010 http://www.calorieking.com http://www.healthydiningfinder.com
