Fesko, O.D., CEO, Community Hospital; JoAnn Birdzell, CEO, St. Catherine Hospital; Janice Ryba, CEO, St. Mary Medical Center his issue of Vim & Vigor addresses that very question. Looking through the eyes of our patients, staff and physicians is the most important considerJohn Gorski ation in all that we do at Community Hospital in Chief Operating Officer Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago Community Healthcare System and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. Investing in new medical technologies is one way we respond to the needs of our patients. On pages 4-5, you’ll learn how patients who suffer from chronic heartburn are able to enjoy the simple pleasure of eating again thanks to a group of physicians at St. Mary Medical Center who are among the first to introduce a new treatment alternative—one without incisions! Our patients are also benefiting from new tracking technology—see pages 6-7—that enables our laboratory to achieve near perfection in the handling and processing of surgical specimens. The Community Healthcare System laboratory, which provides laboratory services for all three hospitals, is among the first in the nation to incorporate this new technology enhancing patient safety. We’re taking a hard look at the design of our facilities to create an environment that promotes healing. On pages 49-51, you’ll learn how we’re making improvements in the delivery of emergency and urgent healthcare. Privacy, comfort and the speed in which we deliver that care are being addressed on many levels, including the design of new facilities. Community Hospital’s Emergency Department has been completely redesigned to meet these goals. A $10.5 million renovation and expansion is nearing completion at St. Mary Medical Center. At St. Catherine Hospital, a federal grant has enabled us to pilot a new healthcare delivery model to improve access to healthcare. The Med-Clinic is a place where patients can turn to for their everyday healthcare needs, offering an alternative to a trip to the Emergency Department. Another new model of care that is catching the attention of our patients is one that taps into our expertise in orthopedic procedures. On pages 52-56, read more about the unique experience of our Joint Academy at St. Catherine Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center, our sports medicine program and our unique surgical alternatives available at all three hospitals. These are just a few of the ways we’re delivering on the feedback given by our patients, physicians and staff, improvements that have earned national recognition for Community Healthcare System (see page 8). And it all begins with a simple question—how can we make this experience of healthcare better for our community?
