OPENING THOUGHTS Growing for You NMMC moving forward on new Westward expansion construction project P Whether it’s inpatient or outpatient service, in a hospital or clinic, we’re dedicated to giving our patients our best. We would like to hear from you, and invite you to contact NMMC with your comments by calling the Community Advocate Line at 800-453-7533 or visiting contact_us. Tell Us How We’re Doing reliminary work is under way on the single largest construction project ever undertaken by North Mississippi Medical Center—the West Bed Tower expansion. When complete, 250 patient rooms will be enlarged and upgraded. More than 1,000 people–employees, physicians, former patients and their family members, support groups, area citizens and elected officials—were involved in the planning sessions. NMMC’s Board of Directors and the North Mississippi Health Services Board of Directors gave the project their seal of approval because it will address concerns that have been expressed about some patient rooms that were built 45 years ago. Illustrations of the new rooms and highlights for those new areas are featured in the article on page 52. Highlights of the project include: • A five-story expansion to the west along South Gloster Street. Each floor is designed to include 44 patient rooms. • A wide corridor will connect the expansion to the existing area, where 16 patient rooms already exist and 28 new rooms will be constructed. • Existing rooms will be enlarged, from about 165 square feet to about 265 square feet, and all rooms will include three distinct zones—one each for patient, family and hospital staff. • The patient area will include a comfortable bed, shower, recliner and built-in bedside table and wall closet. • The patient will have bedside control of everything in the room, including temperature, lighting and even opening or closing the window blinds. The patient will also have a wider view out the window—a 135-degree view, instead of the current 90-degree view. Throughout the project, you’ll be able to find updates by visiting and clicking the banner that says “NMMC’s West Bed Tower project.” On behalf of our healthcare organization, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the planning sessions. Your comments are helping us design hospital rooms that are appropriate for this generation as well as the next.
