Just ask Glen Wurglitz, Psy.D., St. Catherine Hospital’s director of Behavioral Health Services, who also serves as a major in the United States Army. This summer Wurglitz was deployed for a third time since 2007 to assist soldiers who have been through war in Iraq and Afghanistan and are facing the psychological effects that war can have on soldiers and their families. Together with Col. Mary Lopez, Ph.D., CPE, OTR (ergonomics; occupational therapy) from the Office of The Surgeon General, Wurglitz has created a special leadership course called Soldier 360. The program has been designed for soldiers being deployed from war and facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Since July, Wurglitz has been stationed in Vilseck, Germany, at Bavaria Medical Center, where he and colleagues are teaching soldiers a different set of life skills. “We have taken a holistic approach to healing that includes relaxation techniques using a combination of massage, biofeedback therapy, yoga, psychotherapy, nutrition, exercise and spirituality counseling,” he says. A PersonAl Mission Teaching soldiers how to get back to civilian life is a passion Wurglitz has developed and brought back to Northwest Indiana after his first tour in 2007.
