Beating W New High-Risk Breast Clinic offers peace of mind Breast Cancer By ElisE sims omen living with the fear of breast cancer may find peace of mind after visiting a new clinic specifically designed for their needs. The HighRisk Breast Clinic adds a new dimension to care provided by Women’s Diagnostic Centers of Community Hospital, St. Catherine Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center. “Our primary goal is to assist women in learning ways to cope with their concerns about developing cancer and help them make the best decisions about reducing their risk,” says Mary Nicholson, M.D., High-Risk Breast Clinic medical director and regional director of breast imaging services for Community Healthcare System. Who is high Risk? Factors that can increase a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer include her age (80 percent of breast cancers are diagnosed in women over 50), family history (close blood relatives who’ve had the disease), an Ashkenazi Jewish Advanced Imaging Options Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRi) available at the Women’s Diagnostic Center in Munster and st. Mary Medical Center in hobart offers women an advanced alternative to detect cancer. A breast MRi is recommended for high-risk patients and used to supplement mammography. if the breast MRi is positive, a breast MRi biopsy is performed to determine if there is cancer. Women at high risk for breast cancer can come to the clinic with a physician’s order and receive an individualized assessment. Other important services provided at the clinic include a clinical breast exam by a certified nurse practitioner, education about breast self-exams, screening tests, education about breast cancer risk, a personalized surveillance plan and prevention strategies. The clinic staff can help coordinate scheduling and pre-authorization of imaging studies and provide referrals to genetic or psychological counseling, nutrition experts and research studies. High-risk women will discover options to reduce their risk for breast cancer, including surveillance, drug therapy or surgical therapy.
