community healthcare system hospitals give back
a tisket, a tasket—some very special baskets
Community Hospital employees are generous in their contributions to the community and people in need. Their teamwork and generosity are demonstrated in an annual basket raffle that generates funding for the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster. The Centre is a support program of the Community Cancer Research Foundation, a notfor-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of cancer care in Northwest Indiana and south Chicago suburbs. All mind, body and spirit programs and support groups are free of charge. Impressive theme baskets designed by Community Hospital nurses were raffled during Nurses’ Week. Some $20,000 in proceeds were raised from this year’s basket raffle to benefit the Cancer Resource Centre’s programs and services. Over the past four years, the Patient Care Services department of Community Hospital has donated more than $100,000 to the Cancer Resource Centre.

How to Help
auxiliary awards scholarships
The St. Catherine Hospital Auxiliary scholarship program has presented about $20,000 to 16 area students for the 2011–12 academic year. Scholarships are awarded to students residing in St. Catherine Hospital’s primary service area, who are St. Catherine Hospital employees, Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana employees based at St. Catherine, or auxilians or the dependents of employees or auxilians pursuing higher education in the healthcare field. “The Auxiliary at St. Catherine is the heart and soul of this hospital,” says Jo Ann Birdzell, CEO, St. Catherine Hospital. “Year after year, they give openly of their time and talent. If it weren’t for the generosity of the Auxiliary, the scholarship program would not be possible.” The Scholarship Program is funded through the Auxiliary’s Gift Shop sales, fundraising events and Wings of Healing Program. The past year, the Auxiliary donated $115,000 to the hospital.
scouting for food
The Christian Awareness Committee at St. Mary Medical Center has a distinguished history of community service in a variety of areas. One decades-old tradition is the hospital’s annual “Scouting for Food” drive held throughout June each year. “The Scouting for Food drive is conducted with the Calumet Council of the Boy Scouts of America,” says Irene Pacheco, food drive coordinator. “Each year we raise hundreds of dollars and donate hundreds of food items to benefit area food pantries, including Hobart Food Pantry.” St. Mary Medical Center employees, volunteers and medical staff are always generous with their support, Pacheco says. “With so many giving opportunities throughout the year, we’re fortunate to have people willing to contribute in so many ways.”
