Say Goodbye to Pain Varicose veins can cause leg discomfort, aching, swelling, tingling and numbness, night cramps, fatigue and restlessness. They can become red, hot and swollen—a condition known as phlebitis. In some cases, varicose veins close to the surface of the skin can break and cause bleeding. Still in other cases, the varicose veins may indicate venous insufficiency, a problem in the way blood flows in the legs.
