That’s the conclusion of University of California researchers exploring the link between sleep apnea in elderly women and their likelihood of developing dementia. Published last summer in the Journal of the American Medical Association (August 2011), the multicenter study found that those with sleep apnea—a common disorder in which breathing and sleep are disrupted and oxygen intake is reduced—were nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with dementia in the next five years. Many sleep specialists weren’t surprised. While short on scientific proof, many suspected that apnea—also known as sleepdisordered breathing—deprives the brain and other organs of oxygen. Over time, that deficit can lead to a loss of cognitive ability. “Researchers are finding increasingly more connections between sleep disorders and chronic health conditions,” says Crintz Scott, manager of the St. Anthony Hospital Sleep Disorder Center. “Fortunately, most sleep disorders—including sleep apnea, insomnia and others—can be treated or symptoms reduced significantly with an accurate diagnosis.
