Some changes, as outlined in the PPACA, are already in place, such as extended coverage for young adults. Other changes—like improving preventive healthcare coverage—will be taking place over the next two years. Here at our hospitals, we are going to keep doing what we have been doing all along—focusing on patient safety, quality and efficiency and continuing to make sure Northwest Indiana residents have access to affordable healthcare. At Community Hospital, St. Catherine Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center we have specific examples of how this ongoing work is being carried out by our physicians and healthcare professionals through programs and services. We are very proud of these outstanding healthcare professionals who strive to provide a quality care experience to our patients, day in and day out. We honor and celebrate the best of the best at our hospitals on page 3. Using a team approach, our Healthy 4 Life bariatric program is changing lives and giving obese Northwest Indiana residents new hope for a healthier future. You can read about one of the program’s success stories—a patient who has transformed and now serves to inspire—on page 6. At St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, the SilverSneakers program (page 50) is helping seniors—those who may never have been to a fitness center before—take greater control of their health through a combination of physical and social activity. The silver lining is that the program is fully funded through Medicare and is covered by 45 health plans nationwide. New technology in the field of cardiology is helping patients heal from deep vein thrombosis, a condition that could lead to a potentially life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Flip to page 52 to read about how a patient at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart was helped by this minimally invasive treatment. Even the tiniest babies are benefiting from advances in technology and expert touch of our team in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Community Hospital in Munster (page 54). This type of quality care has been passed down from generation to generation.
