Community Briefs St. Catherine Hospital Nursing Excellence award recipient for 2012 is Ana Bran-Guzman (center). D recognizing excellence uring National Nurses Week, nurses throughout Community Healthcare System were honored for their hard work and dedication to their patients. A few of these extraordinary individuals were given special recognition at each of the hospitals. These members of our team represent only a select few; there are many untold stories of heartfelt quality and clinical excellence that happen every day on each floor of Community Healthcare System hospitals. Our team’s outstanding examples and compassionate actions have helped to establish Community Healthcare System as a leader in patient safety, satisfaction and quality care delivered throughout Northwest Indiana. based upon key characteristics of nursing excellence, including leadership, dignity, compassionate care, community, quality and stewardship. According to her nominations, Bran-Guzman “never gives less than 150 percent” and “as a routine, does things for patients outside her job duties” like arranging transportation. Pillars of comPassion in hobart St. Mary Medical Center’s Nursing Pillar Awards highlight nurses who go above and beyond for their patients in five categories: service, quality, finance, growth and people, and a superstar representing all categories. Congrats to this year’s recipients: • The Nursing Pillar Award for Service: Dave Acosta, R.N. • The Nursing Pillar Award for Quality: Pat Troller, R.N. • The Nursing Pillar Award for People: Cristi Meachem, R.N. • The Nursing Pillar Award for Growth: Patty Higgins, R.N. • The Nursing Pillar Award for Finance: Betty Lane, R.N. • St. Mary Medical Center’s Super Star Award: Carolyn Jacobs, R.N. Co-workers say of Jacobs, an eight-year veteran nurse, that “patients consistently compliment Carolyn and identify her as an outstanding staff member. Working at Community Hospital for more than five years, Ross said that she knew that nursing would be her career after her father suffered a heart attack. She saw the nurses and caregivers offer wonderful, compassionate care that made a difference in his recovery. She says she entered nursing because she wanted to be part of that and pay it forward. Co-workers say Ross is making good on that commitment: “She is an amazing nurse. Every single time she comes to work, she does it with a smile and a positive attitude.
