But since they don’t, North Mississippi Medical Center Women’s Hospital offers several programs to help new families from the start. The Golden hour Because a baby’s first hour after birth can have lasting effects, Women’s Hospital now observes the “Golden Hour” for the baby to bond with his or her immediate family. “Research shows that a baby’s first hours can have a lifelong impact not only on the bond with parents, but also on the baby’s physical health,” explains obstetrician-gynecologist Ronald Young, M.D. “The baby’s transition from inside the mother to the outside world is huge,” says Karen Bishop, R.N., lactation consultant. “The mother becomes the anchor, reassuring her newborn that all that has just happened is normal.” Studies show that this mother-infant bond is critical for a baby’s growth and development. “We know that when a baby is placed on his mother, the baby is warmer; his heart rate, respiratory effort and blood glucose stabilize quicker; and the bonding and emotional connection is greater,” Young says. Bishop says babies allowed to breastfeed during this time are more likely to be successful for a longer time. “Stress response is lowered for the mother and baby when nursing is initiated early,” she says.
