Vim & Vigor - Fall 2013 - St. Anthony - (Page 2)

From the CeO Action, Answers and Awards What our accolades mean for you as a patient I f you ever wonder how critical a few short minutes can be, talk with our health professionals on the front lines for heart attacks and strokes. Our prehospital care partners will tell you how calling 911 when symptoms occur enables them to invest every second of ambulance time in assessing and stabilizing the patient. Our Emergency Department staff will explain how the minutes between the incident and reopening the blocked vessel can be the difference between life and death. Our dedicated Cardiovascular and Stroke teams will emphasize the fact that there is not a moment to waste. And they know, as confirmed by St. Anthony Hospital’s having recently earned some of the nation’s most coveted care designations. • We are now a Heart Attack Receiving Center. Awarded by the American Heart Association Mission: LifeLine program, this designation shows we have met or exceeded quality-of-care measures for people experiencing ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)—the most severe type of heart attack in which blood flow is completely blocked to a portion of the heart. • We are now an official Chest Pain Center. The recognition from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care confirms that patients arriving here complaining of chest pain or other symptoms of a heart attack receive the treatment necessary during the critical window of time when the integrity of the heart muscle can be preserved. • We are now a Comprehensive Stroke Center. This certification from the Joint Commission confirms that we have the professional staff, state-of-the-art infrastructure, procedures and training to receive and treat patients who have the most complex strokes. It shows we have dedicated neuro ICU beds for these patients to provide neurocritical care 24/7. It speaks to our advanced imaging, the fact that we can coordinate post-hospital stroke care, that we participate in stroke research, and that we have the processes and performance measures in place that evidence has shown yield better outcomes. Each of these new designations came only after a stringent on-site review by independent experts. Not only did we meet expectations, but the caliber of our staff’s teamwork also merited commendation from these national survey groups. We salute the physicians and associates who garnered this “trifecta.” Even more important: It is their extraordinary care awaiting your family if stroke or heart attack occurs. And that’s great news.
