Grand FeelinG Coloradan’s outlook is excellent after Novalis Tx treatment for prostate cancer by Carla Carwile 54 Fa l l 2 013 W hen elk hunting season opens this fall, Ron Tinkum plans to be part of the action, packing into the Colorado backcountry with the horses and the mule he pastures a few miles from his Grandby home. Tinkum has been sidelined the past two seasons, undergoing dual treatments for prostate cancer. The first procedure—cryoablation using extreme cold to target the tumor—failed. The second, advanced radiotherapy treatment with the Novalis Tx with RapidArc (see sidebar) at St. Anthony Cancer Center, was a success. “It is not common to employ radiotherapy after cryoablation for prostate cancer,” says radiation oncologist Ralph “Buz” Wright, MD. “But our investigation showed it could prove Ron’s best option.” Discussing the details of radiotherapy with Wright was just one of many steps Tinkum took after follow-up testing the first time around showed no drop in his PSA levels.
