he Gwinnett Women’s Pavilion at Gwinnett
Medical Center–Lawrenceville cares for
some of metro Atlanta’s most delicate and
critical infants. When Greg and Tammy
Shumate toured the facility last summer, they
discovered a way they could contribute to GMC,
providing lifesaving transportation for dozens of
area infants.
LOCAL TIES
Greg has called Gwinnett home for his entire
life, watching the area grow and change over the
decades. He grew up in Snellville, graduating from

South Gwinnett High School. He met Tammy while
they were both working and attending Georgia
State University.
In 1985 they married and settled in to raise their
family in Gwinnett. Over the years they have lived
in several cities, including Grayson, where Tammy
spent 18 years on the city council.
As Gwinnett grew, so did the Shumate family,
which now includes a son and daughter in college.
Greg has spent his career helping people obtain
mortgages, and in 2006 he founded Brand Mortgage.
Tammy works there as well, and they view this
business as a way to help Gwinnett continue to
grow and develop. Their support of GMC is another
outreach to help the community.
“We are true believers in supporting Gwinnett
County,” Greg says.
“When you see the leadership of the hospital
involved in the community, serving the community,
it speaks volumes,” Tammy says. “It makes you want
to be involved with the hospital.”
Greg and Tammy Shumate gifted $125,000 so GMC could
purchase a second transport incubator to save the lives of more
critically ill infants.

SPRING 2 013
As members of the Gwinnett Medical Center
Foundation, the Shumates support GMC’s ability to
provide quality healthcare in the region.
While at the Gwinnett Women’s Pavilion, they
saw the newborn intensive care unit (NICU), which
is designated Level III (the highest level of care) and
provides highly specialized intensive care for about
1,000 critically ill and premature newborns each
year. GMC’s NICU also has a neonatal transport
team that travels to other hospitals in the region to
