During a triathlon a couple of years ago, Cecilia suffered a fractured clavicle (collarbone). “It was while I was cycling,” she says. “They hadn’t closed the roads. I rounded a corner on my bike and 52 SPRING 2 013 there was a stopped car. I tried to avoid it and slammed on my brakes. I suppose I skidded. I woke up to the polished shoes and brown pants of the sheriff’s deputy leaning over me.” Adds Greg: “Her fractured clavicle nearly poked through her skin, broken in two places. She had a lot of road rash and the crash destroyed her helmet. Thank goodness for the helmet.” When they saw Snehal Dalal, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon with Southern Orthopedic Specialists in Johns Creek, he recommended inserting a titanium rod to stabilize the bone and speed up the healing process. QUIZ C ecilia Luther wasn’t always an athlete. “But,” she says, “growing up in Monroeville, Ala., in a family with 12 children, we spent all of our time in outdoor activities.” Today, Cecilia still loves to be outdoors, gardening, hiking, swimming, running and cycling, as well as competing in triathlons. Her husband, Greg, also loves the outdoors but prefers to experience it from the seat of a motorcycle. “The motivation for me to stay in shape,” he says, “is off-road, cross-country motorcycle competition. My usual joke is I tell people that I’m a motorcycle addict. I love anything to do with motorcycles.” “We hike together, too,” Cecilia adds. “Every couple of years we plan a trip to the Canadian Rockies.” Tell Us Where It Hurts If you’re suffering from a sports-related injury, go to quiz to take a FREE online quiz and then find out how the experts with GMC’s Sports Medicine Program can help you get back in the action.
