Life in Balance Give Yourself the Red-Carpet Treatment Take the first step: Know your heart-health numbers F ebruary is one of my favorite months. With a husband who teaches film and children who are involved in college and high school theater, my family always settles in to watch the glamour and suspense of the Academy Awards. Although it’s easy to celebrate the success of a movie star, it’s the ordinary woman, overcoming daily challenges, who really deserves the spotlight. To me, a real star is someone like Leta Richardson of Waynesboro. Featured in the article on page 49, Leta works two jobs to make ends meet. But, somehow, this mom manages to find time to exercise five times a week. She also checks in regularly with her primary care doctor to stay on top of her diabetes. She is one of more than 6,000 Virginia women who are members of Club Red (read more inspiring stories at I’m proud to say that this initiative of UVA Heart Center has been going strong for six years. And it will keep going for as long as women need motivation, support and expert advice to keep their hearts healthy. I can’t stress enough how important it is to take a leading role when it comes to your health. Don’t miss “You’re the Star” on page 10. Learn how to overcome stage fright, which might keep you from being open and honest with your doctor. Also get great advice on how to rehearse for one of the most important roles of your life—being an active, informed patient. During the next few weeks, make it a priority to know your numbers. These include your body mass index, waist circumference, cholesterol levels and blood pressure. By knowing these numbers, and taking steps to keep them at optimal levels, you’ll reap the rewards of good health for many years to come. Because it’s February—American Heart Month—you’ll likely be hearing a lot of statistics about heart disease. But when it comes down to it, the only numbers that matter are your own. We can’t all have personal trainers and personal chefs like the celebrities of Hollywood. But we’ve got each other and we’ve got Club Red (plus this magazine) to keep us on an award-winning track.
