Phil’s Feature Investing in Heart Care We’re continuing to expand our suite of specialized services W ith the opening of the Strickland Heart Center in 2012, Gwinnett lost its nationwide status as the largest county without open heart services. Now Gwinnett Medical Center is adding another distinctive facet to cardiovascular care: electrophysiology testing, commonly referred to as EP. This broadening of our cardiac services will allow us to continue to meet the growing needs of residents in the region. EP is a test that records the electrical activity and the electrical pathways of the heart, so that doctors can determine what is disturbing the heart’s rhythm and what the best treatment will be. EP testing will be housed at GMC–Lawrenceville within a newly renovated area devoted to this service. This investment of more than $10 million allows GMC to expand on current related offerings, such as pacemaker implants to support cardiac mapping and additional interventions. Through EP testing, the doctor can safely reproduce various heart rhythms to check the appropriateness of medications, or to determine the best procedure or device to treat an individual’s heart condition. EP requires specialized equipment and specially trained clinical staff, as well as approval at the state level. All these pieces should be in place in spring 2014, when we anticipate beginning this service extension. During our first year of offering open heart surgery, GMC completed more than 300 procedures. As we look beyond these initial steps, we will explore new services and technologies as part of our ongoing commitment to residents regarding cardiac services. Adding EP to the cardiac care lineup will allow more area residents to receive the care they need, from highly trained and experienced staff, closer to home. We are very excited to take this next step in rounding out our cardiovascular care. Philip R. Wolfe, FACHE President and CEO GwInnett MedICal Center President and Chief executive Officer Philip R.
