Opening ThoughTs Innovations in Healthcare NMMC spotlights significant firsts F John Heer President and Chief Executive Officer North Mississippi Health Services onlIne or more than 30 years the North Mississippi Medical Center Heart Institute has been leading the way in innovations in heart care. This issue of Vim & Vigor highlights some of the groundbreaking work done by our physicians. Readers will learn about significant firsts and the role played by interventional cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac electrophysiologists and neurosurgeons. To learn more about these developments, turn to page 4. A generous gift from the Auxiliary of North Mississippi Medical Center assisted with the development of our new Inpatient Hospice Unit, the first of its type in north Mississippi. The 10-bed, hospital-based hospice unit, featured on page 49, uses a team-based approach that encompasses the physical, social and spiritual aspects of the dying process and is ideally suited to serve patients who are nearing the end of life and their families. One of the newest additions to the NMMC campus in Tupelo is the Vein Center. The freestanding center, located at 607 Garfield St., offers outpatient procedures for varicose veins, spider veins and other issues affecting veins of the leg. On page 51, you’ll learn about the services provided there by Robert McAuley, MD, Buddy Williamson, MD, Raymond Orgler, MD, and Newt Harrison, MD. For your convenience, we’ve also included a self-test that you can complete and return to the NMMC Vein Center to determine your risk for varicose veins. Patients suffering from reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) have access to a new treatment option. NMMC surgeons were the first in the region to offer the LINX Reflux Management System. Before this procedure, physicians had the option of treating reflux with medication or a surgical procedure called laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication.
