to improve the ability to read. In addition to visual
training, she also provides home visits to make recommendations regarding the use of lighting and contrast, tactile and contrast markings on appliances,
and other daily living modifications.
Medicare and most insurance companies cover
low vision rehabilitation services provided by an
occupational therapist when referred by a physician,
a nurse practitioner or an optometrist.
Can You See Me now?
Occupational therapist Cheri Nipp suggests these simple
strategies to use remaining vision more effectively:
* Enlarge. Make large labels to place on everyday
household products for easy recognition. Write expiration
dates with marker on milk containers and other food products. Print out telephone numbers with large letters and
numbers. Look for the accessibility settings on your computer, e-reader or cellphone to increase the size of print
or contrast. Look for large button phones and remotes.
* Increase visibility. Use contrasting colors to make
items easier to see; for instance, use a white mug for coffee
and mark the edge of steps or light switches with colored
duct tape. Place a small flashlight on a string in your pantry
or cabinets. Use a gooseneck lamp for tabletop activities
and add undercounter lighting for the kitchen. Use adhesive
dots (craft jewels or adhesive Velcro ® ) in contrasting color
on your appliances to assist with finding settings.
* Organize. Group items (such as household cleaners
or hygiene products) together in small baskets with large
labels. Use drawer organizers, magnetic strips or pegboards
in key areas to place items used most. Avoid clutter, cords
and throw rugs to decrease risk of falls. Use large print pill
boxes for medication and ask your pharmacist for large
print labels.
If you notice that your vision is becoming worse, tell your
eye doctor as soon as possible.
