Tomas Eikinas is an avid triathlete in his spare time, and he was not willing to give that up when it became clear he needed to have surgery to correct a previous shoulder replacement. He did exactly what we are told we should do when making decisions about our health care, which is to get a second opinion—and sometimes a third or a fourth—and to research on our own to learn as much as we can about the procedure we are going to have. It is safe to say that Tomas now knows more about shoulder replacements than most people who have not gone to medical school.
