Children’s Promise radio/telethon, UNC Health Care’s largest single fundraising event. On Nov. 15, more than a dozen Curtis Media Group radio stations and News 14 Carolina will broadcast live from the Children’s Hospital lobby from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., seeking pledges from listeners and viewers across the state. the event also provides an opportunity for hospital patients to have a day of fun by enjoying the carnival in the lobby and various performers. some popular performers return year after year, and this year is no exception. Keith Henderson will perform his popular elvis tribute, and UNC Health Care employees will battle it out on stage for the title of Promise Idol. Plus, Jason Michael Carroll will perform in the lobby and visit with children who aren’t able to leave the patient floors, as he has done every year since 2006. each year, the Children’s Promise, which includes the radio/telethon, the run for the Promise Gala and the Carolina Kids Classic, consistently raises more than $1 million. Patients at N.C. Children’s Hospital will soon have another outdoor space to enjoy during their hospital stay. the alan Davis stiles, MD, lookout terrace, is named in honor of former Children’s Hospital chief physician Dr. alan stiles, a neonatologist and the Brewer Distinguished Professor in the Department of Pediatrics. He was the moving force behind the creation of lookout terrace, which was first inspired by a patient born at UNC Hospitals who spent the entire five years of his life inside the walls of the hospital unable to go outside because of the specialized medical equipment that kept him alive. the rooftop recreational area, located on the seventh floor of the Children’s Hospital, is designed to represent North Carolina’s four distinct natural habitats— mountains, forest, meadow and beach. Children will interact with turtles and butterflies in the meadow, play on a pirate ship and lounge in a dolphin chair at the beach, bask in the shade of a large tree in the forest and enjoy the warmth of a sunroom. lookout terrace is scheduled to open this fall.
