Well - Fall 2012 - (Page 4)

COMMUNITY Nearly 80 life-sized fiberglass cows were featured at the Round Up, an event kicking off the three-month public art exhibition phase of CowParade NC, held at Golden Belt in Durham, N.C., on Aug. 18, 2012. Cows on Parade Part fundraiser, part art exhibit, CowParade North Carolina 2012 is in full swing. T 4 Well ERIN KELLEY CONTRIBUTED TO THIS ARTICLE. It is considered the world’s largest public art event and has raised more than $30 million for local nonpro t partners since 1999. Each cow has a sponsor and a regional or nationally recognized artist who was asked to transform the 125pound berglass mold into a work of art. The decorated cows, grouped in herds, are on display throughout the Triangle. Herd locations include the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus, the American Tobacco campus and Golden Belt in Durham, and North Hills and Fayetteville Street (downtown) in Raleigh. Visitors will also nd several “cows in outlying pastures” throughout the greater Triangle and beyond, as far away as Fayetteville and Wilmington. hroughout the Triangle area, people have noticed a number of cows on the loose. These are no ordinary cows, though. Dressed in their nest costumes and out ts, like Ramooses and Lady Carolina Bloo who are both adorned in festive Carolina blue and white, these cows are part of CowParade North Carolina 2012. The life-sized art exhibit and fundraiser features 80 painted and costumed cows, which have been transformed by regional artists and will be on display through Dec. 7. On Feb. 2, the herd’s best will be sold to the highest bidder at the Battle for the Cattle gala auction at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, with the proceeds bene tting N.C. Children’s Hospital. One of the most beloved creations, Mookey, resembles a sock monkey, complete with button eyes, a red and white nose, and red hat. Sponsored by the UNC Health Care Volunteer Association, this very special cow is inspired by the sock monkeys that are handmade by hospital volunteers and given to children treated at N.C. Children’s Hospital. The stu ed animals comfort children during recovery. The rst CowParade was held in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1998 and has since grown to more than 50 cities worldwide.
