Providing the Support
Patients Need
RECEIVING A DIAGNOSIS OF A SERIOUS ILLNESS can take a toll in
many ways. At least for a while, a patient’s life may be put on hold as treatment
and healing become the top priority. Having a strong support system of family
and friends is instrumental in helping patients navigate the journey. Finding
support programs within the health care facility also can help patients during
the uncertain times in their recovery.
Irene Cagney had both. Though a diagnosis
of an aggressive form of breast cancer initially
shocked her, Irene discovered she was stronger
than she thought. With the support of her family,
the benefit of clinical trials and the support programs at the N.C. Cancer Hospital, she endured
surgeries, chemotherapy and a stubborn infection during her yearlong battle with cancer.
Read about Irene and how she is doing now
on page 6.
