At least for a while, a patient’s life may be put on hold as treatment and healing become the top priority. Having a strong support system of family and friends is instrumental in helping patients navigate the journey. Finding support programs within the health care facility also can help patients during the uncertain times in their recovery. Irene Cagney had both. Though a diagnosis of an aggressive form of breast cancer initially shocked her, Irene discovered she was stronger than she thought.With the support of her family, the benefit of clinical trials and the support programs at the N.C. Cancer Hospital, she endured surgeries, chemotherapy and a stubborn infection during her yearlong battle with cancer. Read about Irene and how she is doing now on page 6.
