UNC Health Care Names New Medical Director of WakeBrook Campus UNC Health Care has named Brian Sheitman, MD, as the new medical director of WakeBrook Campus, a crisis care facility that has been operated by Wake County since it opened in January 2011. Dr. Sheitman, a professor in the UNC School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and medical director of the UNC Center for Excellence in Brian Sheitman, MD Community Mental Health, will oversee care at WakeBrook as UNC Health Care assumes administration of the facility. “This is an exciting opportunity for UNC to enhance the care provided for Wake County’s behavioral health patients,” Dr. Sheitman says. “Our top goals include ensuring a continuity of care for patients, reducing the strain on hospital emergency departments, and bringing a higher level of care to this important and fragile population.” UNC is working closely with Wake County, Alliance Behavioral Healthcare and other partners to ensure that enhancing services at WakeBrook is one step toward improving all care provided to behavioral health patients. “As UNC Health Care assumes responsibility for providing crisis care for behavioral health patients in Wake County, we needed a well-respected leader to serve as medical director at WakeBrook,” says Jack Naftel, MD, vice chair for Clinical Affairs and Child & Adolescent Services in the UNC Department of Psychiatry. “Dr. Brian Sheitman brings valuable clinical and managerial experience to that key role.” PHoto: BrIAN StrICklANd UNC Physician Elected President of the Association of Professors of Cardiology The chief of cardiology in the UNC School of Medicine has been elected president of the Association of Professors of Cardiology (APC). UNC School of Medicine Receives Grant The UNC School of Medicine received a $1 million gift from The North Carolina Eye Bank to establish a unique and innovative multidisciplinary surgical skills lab. The gift to the Department of Ophthalmology will be shared among three neurosciences departments: Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, and Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. The newly created laboratory, the only one of its kind in the region, provides advanced surgical training opportunities for medical students, residents, fellows and physicians across the state. “Training future generations of eye surgeons to serve the people of North Carolina is one of our top priorities at UNC Eye,” says Donald L. Budenz, MD, MPH, professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology. “The new surgical training center will greatly enhance our educational mission by providing our residents with a stateof-the-art facility where they can practice and learn from our world-class surgeons.” PHoto: toM fUldNer PHoto: PAUl BrAly of tArHeel IMAgeS UNC HEALTH CArE NEWS This high-tech laboratory provides advanced surgical training opportunities for medical students, residents, fellows and physicians across the state.
