VENDOR SPOTLIGHT R&S Landscaping A Full-Service, Family-Owned Exterior Construction and Maintenance Company by Pamela Schweppe hat do the Mars candy company, the Wegmans supermarket chain and kitchen and bath product manufacturer Kohler have in common? According to Forbes, they are among the country’s top family-owned companies. For some people, the mention of a family-run business conjures up images of a mom-and-pop operation. As the Forbes list shows, however, some companies manage to build on family relationships to deliver a high level of expertise and service. One of those companies is R&S Landscaping of Medford, Mass. Just ask Steve McGorty, maintenance director for a property management company specializing in high-barrier markets such as Boston. For the past seven years, his firm has relied on R&S Landscaping for maintenance work on its properties in the area. McGorty’s company also relies on R&S Landscaping for capital projects, including a recent $650,000 enhancement project for a multi-family residence in Rhode Island. It was a complex project that involved handling logistical issues, such as coordinating the needs of local municipalities and tenants. “They got the job done on schedule, on budget, and without any issues to speak of,” he says. “They do a lot more than just cut the grass. They have a business sense, a knowledge of how to get the job done. They’re fabulous.” W 40 ADVERTISEMENT But your project doesn’t have to be a major undertaking for you to receive that same kind of attention from R&S Landscaping. As Keri Brown, who handles HR and accounts receivable for the firm, puts it, “We’re big enough to handle all outdoor maintenance needs but small enough to provide individual attention.” A Business Philosophy Rooted in Quality R&S Landscaping was founded in 1987 by Keri’s father, Ed Rudolph, who currently serves as president. Working alongside Ed from the beginning has been his son, operations manager Ted Rudolph, who will soon be taking over company leadership responsibilities from his father. In its early years, R&S Landscaping primarily handled outdoor maintenance for private residences. Today, it serves as a one-stop shop for anything to do with exterior maintenance and construction. Its client list includes commercial and multi-family residential clients within the I-495 belt of eastern Massachusetts, from the South Coast to Andover and from Worcester to Boston. “Whether it’s north or south of the city, we can get there easily,” says Ted. As the company has grown, so has its staff. With as many as 60 employees at peak season, R&S offers services including design and installation, irrigation, tree services, asphalt services and snow removal, in addition to general maintenance. Many of the workers have been with the company for a dozen years or more, so, as Keri puts it, “They know all our clients, so they’re not always learning from scratch.” That level of loyalty is important to the Rudolphs. “We’re quality conscious in everything we do,” says Ted. “Because it’s a family business, we have a vested interest in the way the place looks.” Branching Out into Multiple Services When exploring the services that R&S provides, the natural place to start is landscape construction and maintenance. R&S Landscaping offers weekly mowing, fertilizer programs, insect and disease control, overseeding, aeration and seasonal plantings. On top of these services, R&S offers computerenhanced design and construction that can turn the outdoors into a beautiful living area, with patios, graceful decorative walkways, fireplaces and fire pits, outdoor kitchens and seating. Just as important to the appearance — and property values — of a condominium association is paving, from roadways and parking lots to sidewalks and curbing. Three years ago, Ed Rudolph invited Thomas Turner into the company to manage that aspect of the business. A 12-year veteran of the
