Making the Right Calls

A

s I write my first chapter president's message, I am just returning
from the Boston College-Providence College basketball game in
Providence. I wanted to capture in writing two important takeaways
and how they relate to CAI. What does a basketball game in Rhode
Island have to do with CAI? Glad you asked.
First, the Red Sox owners brought the 2013 World Series trophy to center
court at halftime and all 11,750 fans stood in applause. I thought: "What a
great move by the Red Sox owners bringing this shiny relic of baseball sainthood to Providence. Sure, the team plays at Fenway Park in Boston, but let's
face it, Ortiz and company belong to all of us New Englanders."
It's the same with CAI New England. While the chapter may have its physical office in Wellesley, Mass., the reality is that this chapter serves unit owners, board members, managers, and business partners, all working to benefit
thousands of community associations in Rhode Island, Vermont, Maine, New
Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Forget Connecticut, they have their own chapter, and besides, that's the state with the second most Yankees fans anyway.
As 2014 chapter president, my objective will be to team up with the chapter
executive director, Claudette Carini, and her amazing staff in Wellesley, MA
and to be increasingly mindful of issues that may arise for our members in all
New England chapter states. For as outgoing chapter president, Pete Garrett,
wrote last year, "We are all in it together."
Second, with 10 seconds to go in regulation, the referee called PC for goaltending and a foul, both of which enabled BC to tie the score and move the
game into overtime. While PC eventually won, that fact isn't important to my
message. What's relevant is the referee (in my unbiased and expert opinion,
of course) was wrong and the call altered the game. Ideally, refs are supposed
to stay out of the way and not draw attention to themselves - which admittedly is hard for any leader, especially one wearing a whistle and dressed like a
zebra. They should just let the players play.
Though I won't be a referee, my other objective in 2014 will be to make
the right calls, including letting our paid professional staff do their jobs,
meeting and assisting with chapter committees whenever possible, and chairing meetings of my fellow board members - all to accomplish our chapter's
vision of being the foremost advocate and information resource for New
England community associations. Most importantly, though, I will try not to
make a wrong call that could alter the game.
