CHANGE MANAGEMENT IN DIFFICULT TIMES
A second strategy is to stay curious.
As property management leaders in the
industry or serving on a board, we are
frequently confronted with questions,
scenarios, and proposals that require
rapid judgement. Because of this, we
often rely upon our experience and
understanding of the facts. But what
if our facts are not settled in this
case? What if it is something
outside of our experience? Could the new
board member or
manager have a different
experience that would lead us
to a different conclusion? In each
of these, our focus should be to stay curious. Be curious about what they are saying or suggesting, and to be curious about
how they came to that idea or conclusion.
Beyond considering someone else's perspective, at least for a short time, adopt
their position and work it through from
their perspective. This assists everyone
involved in not only exploring additional

any waypoints or obstacles that must
be navigated. Surprises - rather than
challenges - are often what cause the
majority of change-related stress.
Change is inevitable. While often
difficult and uncomfortable, much of
our pain comes from delaying or fighting
against it. Rather than simply enduring
the change, we can shape change. The old
slogan that "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" is
no longer applicable. If we are to prepare
ourselves for the inevitable change that
will come, we should constantly ask
ourselves, "What could we do better if
we were to break and rebuild this?"
