Intercity Buses

Especially along the Northeast Corridor and in parts of the Midwest, the bus is gaining significant momentum as a means of commuting and traveling, and the trend shows no signs of stopping. From December 2009 to December 2010, intercity scheduled bus service across the United States grew by 8.6 percent, compared to 5.1 percent growth from December 2008 to December 2009, according to research by the Chaddick Institute, released last month. That number, which measures scheduled service, including curbside bus operators and conventional bus operators (like Greyhound), outpaced rail and air, says Joseph Schwieterman, a transportation professor at DePaul University and director of the Chaddick Institute. A numbers of factors converged to revive buses from somewhat passé to the first choice among passengers looking for a convenient, inexpensive, eco-friendly, and hassle-free means of traveling. In a time when the economy was plummeting like a rock off a cliff, fuel prices were soaring, and airline security was growing increasingly stringent and more intrusive, the climate was just right for a bus travel revival. At the same time, new

players began to enter the intercity bus market, and Internet technology began allowing customers to access bus service without going to a service window, making curbside service more appealing and convenient than ever. Root of Change Prior to 2003, Schwieterman says the bus industry had struggled to return to the glory it experienced in the 1950s and 1960s, when bus travel was in its heyday. “The decline was really dramatic. To dissect it, we used the “Russells Motorcoach Guide,” a compendium of schedules, and we got a pretty good data set. It showed a slow decline until the mid-1970s when the industry really fell on hard times. Then it stabilized, but service continued to decline after 9/11, which really surprised us.” While many industry observers point to the Megabus entrance in the market as the pivotal moment for intercity bus travel, Peter Pantuso, president and CEO of ABA, says the groundwork for the resurgence began prior to 2006. “You have to go back maybe five to six years when we began to see the Chinatown operators really gain in popular-
