How the West is Won

2008. “It was a little slower starting, and our timing may not have been as strategic as it should have been. We weren’t seeing the rapid growth we saw in the Midwest,” Moser says. “It was a challenge for us being more of an East Coast and Midwest-based company to try to monitor and manage a company that was on the West Coast.” While there are plenty of theories as to why intercity bus service hasn’t been as successful as in other parts of the country, Schwieterman says geography plays a major role. “The geography of California was not a good match. LA-San Francisco is probably too far for curbside service to catch on quickly,” he says. “And in Phoenix, there aren’t many attractive destinations within a two- to four- hour time period, so geography made it an uphill battle. But I think now the product could establish a profitable foothold, especially in northern California where the cities are closer together.” What can the bus companies do to win over the West? Schwieterman says there’s a concept for a bus transit system that has legs if it gets the proper push. “I think the system hasn’t really marketed the hub-and-spoke transit system concept yet,” a concept that would transport commuters from the main downtown drop-off point closer to their homes in the suburbs or outskirts of town. “More or less you buy one-way tickets, but the next step may be to market connections,” he says. “Another option would be to figure out how to avoid lengthy meal stops by maybe offering meals en route or limiting stops to 15 minutes.” A third idea would be to consider some sort business-class type option, Schwieterman says. “We’re already seeing luxury bus companies pop up with choices of legroom and things like that. You could see a double-deck bus that has eight business class seats upstairs with an LCD screen and extra legroom. It would attract the corporate business traveler.”

THE WEST COAST HAS LONG BEEN CONSIDERED A CAR-CENTRIC CUSTOMER BASE. WHAT CAN BUS OPERATORS DO TO WIN OVER THE REGION?
rom a distance, the contrast seems puzzling. Despite a successful model in the United Kingdom and the Midwest, when Megabus introduced service to the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tempe, Ariz., it fell pretty flat, resulting in the company discontinuing service originating from Los Angeles altogether in June
