ocals and tourism officials are hoping the show will spark a renewed interest in the town and see it as more than just a gaming destination. By the end of the 20th century, Atlantic City was no longer seen as a glamorous getaway. Instead, it was epitomized by daytrippers stopping in town for a few hours to hit the slots. But new competition from casinos and slots in neighboring states has forced the town to redefine itself. “It’s no longer the casinos who can get people here,” says Jeff Vasser, president of the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority. “We want to be a more well-rounded destination and a year-round destination at that. To keep sand out of hotel lobbies, the town constructed a boardwalk in 1870, the world’s first. The 1920s ushered in a golden age for Atlantic City. When the country dried up during Prohibition, Atlantic City remained an electric and vibrant town, as seen in “Boardwalk Empire,” with illustrious figures ensuring the flow of bootleg liquor and underground gambling. Above ground, high-end hotels like The RitzCarlton and Marlborough-Blenheim spanned the boardwalk, while Broadwayand Vaudeville-caliber shows provided entertainment. The resort catered to the middle class as well. Along the boardwalk, carnival-style entertainment, the atten-
