Atlantic City
the city. Tropicana, for example, opened The Quarter, designed to resemble Old Havana, with an IMAX theater, shops including Brooks Brothers and Erwin Pearl, and high-end restaurants such as Palm and Cuba Libre. Nearby, Caesars opened The Pier Shops at Caesars in 2006, showcasing luxury retailers like Burberry, Gucci, and Tiffany & Co., and well-known restaurants like Buddakan and Phillips Seafood. This development helped transform casinos from simple gaming stops to overnight destinations. “Casino numbers may be down,” Vasser says. “But what people aren’t hearing about is that the number of occupied rooms is up, restaurant covers are up, and trips to some of our attractions are holding their own. That’s the good news.” Still, despite all of the high-end development, Atlantic City offers groups plenty of value—a plus for recession-era travel. One of the biggest draws for groups is The Walk, an outlet mall at that sits at the end

Christie’s Big Gamble
The New Jersey governor’s plan to revitalize Atlantic City

A

tlantic City is no stranger to betting big—and that’s just what New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is doing with his plan to overhaul Atlantic City. Tough-talking Christie didn’t mince words at a July 2010 press conference, where he announced plans to take over the gaming and tourism industries, and assume control of certain municipal duties under the newly created “Atlantic City Tourism District.” The goal is the transformation of Atlantic City into a convention and family-friendly resort, with expanded entertainment and amusement options. In addition to the new tourism district are plans for an increased police presence and a marketing campaign to promote the city’s new image. Expected to be impacted by the sweeping changes is the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority (ACCVA), the city’s principal marketing arm. Jeff Vasser, president of the ACCVA, says he’s eager to hear the final outcome of Christie’s proposal and whether or not the agency will be folded into the new tourism district.” Everyone is very optimistic about what it’s going to do for Atlantic City,” he adds. “Frankly, there hasn’t been a governor before him to put the focus on Atlantic City like he has. He wants to make it the best it can be.”

Camera-friendly. Budget-friendly.
