How to

BE HIP
Hula dancing embodies the beauty and culture of Hawaii. And during the weeklong Merrie Monarch Festival on the Big Island from April 24-30, dozens of dancers celebrate their heritage and compete in hula dancing contests. Hips have been swaying in the competition for 48 years. And in addition to three days of hula competition, the festival includes a parade, art show and crafts fair. Most festival events are free, but tickets are required for competitions. See the festival’s website for the competition ticket order form. ✱ Merrie Monarch Festival | (808) 9359168 | www.merrie monarch.com

he Hawaiian Islands erupted into existence because of ancient volcanoes. As the lava pushed up through the Earth’s crust, it created a landscape that varies from lush plantations to barren moonscapes. One of the best places to take in this geological variety is Diamond Head State Monument on the eastern coast of Waikiki. A massive eruption more than 300,000 years ago created the crater that now covers more than 475 acres of Diamond Head. Called Le’ahi, the summit is accessible by a steep trail. While it’s a tough, hour-and-a-half to two-hour hike up the .8 mile trail with 560 feet altitude gain, the view is worth the effort. Along with stunning vistas, visitors can stroll by bunkers and a lighthouse placed at the summit in 1917. Another must-see is the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, home to two of the most active volcanoes in the world. Depending on the volcanic

activity, visitors can see active lava flows and how the island was formed over the centuries. A good way to take in the area is with a cruise around Crater Rim Drive, an 11-mile road around the Kilauea volcano summit. The route passes through the varied landscape of the area. Like the islands’ unique geography, the native people have developed a distinctive culture. Preserving the traditions and heritage of Hawaiian natives is the Polynesian Cultural Center on Honolulu. With several interactive activities and recreations of eight villages, visitors can learn about the everyday lives of those cultures that call Hawaii home.
