for everybody. The festival really did put Rothbury on the map,” he adds. “Before this festival you’d go anywhere and they’d ask you where you’re from, and you’d say Rothbury, and they’d say, Where’s that? People associate it with the music festival now.” Howell says State College also enjoys an enhanced tourism profile as a result of its festival. The CPCVB helps fund the festival’s marketing and the bureau staffs a festival book to disperse tourist information. “Because we have our booth down there, people come by and say, ‘We’re in town for the festival, but what else is there to do?’” Howell says. “We’ll give them a whole list of things and tell them if they can’t fit them all in, they can come back. We find that once we get someone here, they tend to come back.” The key to successfully managing the event is “plan, plan, plan,” Howell says. “One of the things is having the right mix of people involved.” That means public safety officers, traffic planners, and neighborhood associations. For group tour operators, the same rule applies: Hotels and restaurants in cities with well-established festivals tend to book up far in advance of the event, so planning ahead is critical. Perhaps the model for a festival’s potential to bring dollars and generate yearround interest in a city is the 10-day South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. The 25-year-old festival now lures 200,000 attendees and generates $113 million. “The city has grown along with SXSW, and it’s also grown because of SXSW—it helped the city get the attention that it does,” says Beth Krauss, media relations manager for the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Austin CVB doesn’t organize the festival, but it plays a key role in ensuring its success. The bureau opens a second visitor location at city hall to pass out maps and information on local restaurants and emergency services. “The best way you can help people is to know who they need to talk to,” Krauss says. “We get calls from

event planners to journalists looking for publicists to bands looking to play. The best thing we can do is know who to talk to so we can efficiently service the people coming to town. And every year we send out messaging on how to navigate SXSW. Part of the strategy is educating visitors before they arrive.” —Alexa Stanard
